MMF seeks composer for 2024 Colorado River Commissioning Project.
Applications due July 7, 2023 (**extended deadline**)

The Moab Music Festival’s 2023 and 2024 seasons are exploring the region’s relationship with the Colorado River water corridor. The Colorado River runs directly through Moab and is an integral part of the city, region, and music festival.

MMF is seeking to commission a composer to write a 7-10′ work for 1-6 musicians. The winner will receive a $4,000-8,000* prize as well an audio recording of the premiere. Eligible composers are based in Utah and/or have a strong connection to the state.

Embarking on its 31st season, the Moab Music Festival (MMF) was founded in 1992 by New York-based musicians; violist and Artistic Director Leslie Tomkins and pianist/conductor and Music Director Michael Barrett. They were instantly captivated by the red rocks of Moab, and were inspired to combine the magical landscape with live performances of great music. The MMF has an enviable history of presenting new American music at each year’s Festival. It is typical to have the music of many living composers represented, anchored by a Composer-in-Residence. These composers include such luminaries as Lou Harrison, Lukas Foss, Peter Lieberson, Paul Moravec, Aaron Jay Kernis, Chen Yi, Bright Sheng, John Musto, Lowell Liebermann, Clarice Assad, and Timo Andres. A new program, the Commissioning Club, raises annual funds for the creation of new works each season.

*The final award amount will be based on the instrumentation/length of work agreed upon between the composer and MMF.
